About Pest Animal San Jose and Our Services:
How to Trap a Raccoon
Although they are usually thought to be cute and cuddly, San Jose raccoons are destructive little
bandits that can find their way into almost any building, bin, or can. They are messy,
smelly, and viscous if confronted. They can cause thousands of dollars in damages around
your yard, home, and gardens with their destructive ways. . There are number of control
methods suggested by the California experts, but many are messy, involve guns, dangerous poisons,
or are inhumane. Poison does work but what about the danger to you family and pets?
Poisoned San Jose raccoons most often end up crawling off and dying in hard to reach places causing a long
lasting stench and attracting carrion feeders.
Trapping your raccoon(s) is the best method for safe and reliable removal. There are a number of
different ways to do that as well. One more unusual method of trapping raccoons is the use of a
snare pole. This type of hand held trap is best used when the San Jose raccoon is contained in a small space
like your attic or a shed. For snaring a raccoon in a tight space, you need to corner it, and then
maneuver the cable loop over its head and one leg. Once you have looped the creature, pull the line
tight, and lift it into a waiting cage or bag. Snap traps are a lethal (killing) type of trap that
may catch your unwanted California guest, but now you have to touch the body and clean up the mess.
Live traps are inexpensive, come in a variety of sizes, and are easy to use. A live trap is a sturdy
hard wire cage with a pressure plate in the center, a heavy-duty spring mechanism door, and at trigger,
that connects the two. Bait is placed on a plate atop the pressure plate. When the San Jose animal tries to retrieve
the bait, the door slams shut, trapping the animal securely. The one -way exclusion funnel is also an
excellent solution for ridding your property of Raccoons. The one-way exclusion funnel takes advantage
of the Raccoons’ curiosity, and foraging nature. The simple device is ¼-inch hardware cloth rolled into
the shape of a funnel and secured. The large end is then attached to the outside of a hole that the raccoon
uses frequently to enter and exit your California property or a building. To install, the funnel, identify their main
pathways by the amount of droppings or scrape marks you will see.
Seal off any other holes you might find (or place exclusion funnels over them as well!). Place the wide end
of the one-way exclusion funnel over the remaining hole initially made by the San Jose Raccoons. By using the Raccoons’
own opening, you do not alert the animal to danger. One-way Exclusion funnels require no bait, poison, or special
tools to install. The idea is simple. It crawls out the hole through the wide end, escaping through the narrow end,
which is just big enough for the creature to exit the funnel. As the Raccoon exits, the small funnel end collapse down,
leaving a hole too small for re- entry. When the California Raccoon returns it realizes too late that it cannot get back in.
You can also attach a cage to the end of the funnel, to capture the animals for relocation.
